Stenosed Renal Arteries from MRA


Description:

In this case the blood flow in a rigid model of the renal arteries of a patient with stenosis. The anatomical model was reconstructed from contrast-enhanced MRA images and flow conditions were obtained using phase-contrast MR velocity measurements.

The picture below shows the finite element grid used for a CFD simulation. This grid was generated using adaptive background grids to increase the resolution of the mesh in regions of large surface curvature, and reduce the total number of elements in the volume:

A CFD simulation was performed imposing flow rates measured using phase-contrast MR. These simulations can provide useful clinical information such as pressure drops across stenosis, which may help assessing the functional significance of renal stenoses:
